3837 is the "Works number" given to this Hawthorn Leslie 0-6-0 saddle tank locomotive built in 1934 in Tyneside for Stewarts and Lloyd Iron and Steel Works in Corby, Northamptonshire. At the time 3837 was considered to be one of the most powerful engines of this kind and much of the work involved conveying slag and completed goods to and from the furnaces, the tip or the exchange sidings for onward movement.
On arrival at Stewarts and Lloyds she was given the running number of 11 initially but as there was already a locomotive with the fleet number of 11 this was amended to 16 at some stage. These engines proved to be extremely strong and reliable and were favourites among the enginemen having a relatively large cab. They were regularly used double headed within the vicinity of the steelworks and must have made a very impressive sight. During the late 1960's Stewarts and Lloyds successors acquired new diesel locomotives from British Railways and these useful workhorses began to be withdrawn from service.
3837 was saved for preservation with sister engine number 14 (currently on display in Corby) and 21 (from a later 1936 batch of engines) which is now at the Ribble Valley Railway. 3837 then spent time at The Nene Valley Railway, The Battlefield Line and The Swanage Railway.
The engine arrived at Leatherhead Leisure Centre, Surrey in 1985, donated by the Biwater Group Limited of Dorking.
In September 2010 the loco was purchased by The Hawthorn Leslie 3837 Preservation Society and was subsequently moved to Isfield in East Sussex (the home of the Lavender Line).
There are some large gaps in the history of 3837 that we need filling, so if you have any information please contact us and share your story.
We have a few pictures of the loco in our Gallery. We would be very interested in seeing more photographs. If you have any pictures you would like us to upload please send them to us at firstname.lastname@example.org
